Abstract

Everyday astronomical phenomena, such as sunrise and sunset, play a central role in Astronomy education as they are directly connected to daily experience and to the understanding of Earth’s motions. This study analyzes the variation of sunrise and sunset times throughout the year 2024 for the city of Ipaussu, São Paulo State, Brazil, using real astronomical data obtained from a digital database and processed with the Python programming language. The adopted methodology follows a quantitative approach of descriptive and exploratory nature, based on the construction of graphical representations that allow the identification of temporal patterns, such as day length and the occurrence of the longest and shortest days of the year, in relation to solstices and equinoxes. The results highlight the relationship between day-length variation and the inclination of Earth’s rotational axis, as well as the continuous and cyclical nature of these phenomena throughout the year. From an educational perspective, the proposed approach complements traditional observational practices and expands possibilities for Astronomy teaching and outreach by engaging students and teachers with real data and contemporary scientific analysis practices.
